Explorers
"Badgers Explorer Scout Unit"
Age Range: 14 years to 18 years
Although the provision of Explorer Scouting is organised by the District, the 27th
Woolwich is in a position to offer, in partnership with the District, an Explorer
Scout Unit. The Unit itself operates as a satellite unit for the District, and it's
members wear the District Unit's scarf.
The programme offers each Explorer Scout the
opportunity to gain two Chief Scout Awards (Platinum and Diamond) and the topmost
youth award (The Queen’s Scout Award) during their time with the unit, with the option
to complete all or any of these awards in the next section (Scout Network).
These
awards are run on similar lines to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and can both be
gained using the same programme of activities.
There is also the opportunity to gain
some of the 28 activity badges whilst in the section as well as gaining external
awards such as St. John’s Ambulance, Red Cross and Lifesaving awards.
The nationally
run Young Leaders scheme is open to all Explorer Scouts, and by taking part in this
scheme can help out in many of the younger sections in a leadership role, and as
such take the first tentative steps on the leadership ladder, with many eventually
taking out a full leader’s warrant at the age of 18.
The programme also offers the
Explorer Scouts the opportunity to take part in adventurous activities, such as Land
Yachting, Rock Climbing and Abseiling, Canoeing, White Water Rafting, and many more.
This
is Amy’s Story as to why she enjoys being an Explorer Scout.
“What do I enjoy about
being an Explorer at the 27th Woolwich... Well, I still come back after a number
of years, so there must be something special about us. I’ve made many friends here,
most of whom I still talk to, and it’s guaranteed that every Scout night will be
full of laughs.
On the more serious side I have been given the great opportunity
of training as a Young Leader, learning valuable skills such as first aid, and going
on many adventurous outings including climbing, camping, abseiling and a pool party.
As you can see it is all happening here.”
